The Young Designers’ Exhibition (YODEX) is the largest design exhibition for products designed by students in the world. With a long history, the YODEX presents many different ideas of design, and it is also an important platform for enterprises to know recent innovative concepts.
To combine the production capacity of industries with the innovative ideas of students and to form a practical connection between industries and universities, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs proposed the “YODEX University-industry Collaboration Program” and invited representative enterprises from different fields to provide themes for the graduates of design-related departments to start collaborations. It is the largest and the most professional university-industry collaboration program with the deepest interaction in the country. For the purpose of supporting the development of innovative and advanced products and deepening the impression of smart products for vehicles, UniMax accepted the invitation and joined the university-industry collaboration program with the theme of “IoT x Automotive Electronics, Smart Devices for Vehicles in the Future”.
UniMax Electronics Inc. (UniMax) is a wholly-owned subsidiary in the field of automotive electronics owned by ASUS Group. Founded 10 years ago, UniMax joined the university-industry collaboration program with its knowledge and design capability and provided the support of resources and instructions for students. UniMax helped to instructed 3 teams of students among more than 10 teams of students who registered for joining the exhibition.

The product with the most outstanding concept among the works of the students who worked with UniMax in the university-industry collaboration program was the Smart Vehicle Warning Triangle designed by You and Zhang from the Department of Industrial Design, Shih Chien University. The design concept of this product is to avoid the accident in which the driver is hit by another incoming vehicle when he/she gets off the car and tries to put a vehicle warning triangle behind the car. The Smart Vehicle Warning Triangle can be controlled by the driver to go to a certain point behind the car after any problem or accident happened for warning the incoming vehicles, which may drastically reduce the risk in vehicle breakdown. At the same time, the driver may also connect his/her smartphone to the IoV and upload the information about the breakdown to the database of navigation software in real-time, and other drivers using the same navigation software may plan their routes with the reference of the breakdown information. Roadside assistance can also be called for through the APP.
With a streamlined shape, the Smart Vehicle Warning Triangle exceeds the conventional triangular solid structure, and its structure is simplified into a folded form which can be unfolded with only the rotation of a single axis, reducing the time for setting up. There is no screw can be seen from the outside, and it may prevent accidental finger cutting in emergency situations or prevent parts from falling apart and damaging other vehicles. The Smart Vehicle Warning Triangle is an excellent masterpiece of university-industry collaboration with the combination of IoV technologies and the concepts of human factors and ergonomics.
